SPM is capable of atomic-scale imaging, and the manipulation of atoms/molecules on the surface. Using a sharp probe, carbon monoxide (CO) molecules were picked up and arranged to spell “UBC” on copper (111).

Copper (II) phthalocyanines are just one of the organic molecules that we look at. They are relatively planar, π-conjugated molecules, with interesting optical electronic and magnetic properties. There are a whole class of phthalocyanines with other metal centres that can change the behaviour of the molecules.
